The high tensile strengths of precipitation hardening stainless steels come after a heat treatment process that leads to precipitation hardening of a martensitic or austenitic matrix. Hardening is achieved through the addition of one or more of the elements Copper, Aluminium, Titanium, Niobium, and Molybdenum.

Solution Treatments.
As supplied 17-4 PH is usually in the solution treated condition (Condition A). It can be heat treated at different temperatures to offer a wide range of properties.
17-4 PH steel is a grade of martensitic, precipitation-hardening stainless steel with the additions of chromium, nickel, and copper. 17-4 stainless steel has a valuable combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and toughness in both base metals and welds.
